ROCK DRAWING

Posted on Format Gallery

Drawing, in its widest sense, has always been part of Dunhill and O’Brien’s collaborative process — a way of testing, measuring, arguing, planning and trying things out.

Rock Drawing brings together sketches, diagrams, photographs, models and other working material generated during the making of Rock. Rather than illustrating the finished sculpture, these fragments record the negotiations, practical problems and changes of direction that accumulated around it.

The work also extended the idea of drawing into movement. When the upholstered Rock was wheeled through the back streets of Nishi-Ogikubo to Zempukuji Park, taking a convoluted route to avoid a steep hill, the journey itself became a kind of physical drawing through the city.
